Writing a Good Essay

Guidelines for Writing an Essay

  • First think about what you want to tell the reader in response to the essay prompt.
  • Write a thesis sentence that tells the reader the gist of what you will write about.
  • Provide the main parts in an order that makes each part follow the one before and makes each part easy to understand.
  • Use details and examples to make what you want to say in your essay clear. You should include specific reasons and examples. Be sure your specific reasons and examples make your point or tell your story better.
  • Consider possible objections to what you have written, for example that it is not realistic or original if it is supposed to be.
  • End your essay with a conclusion that summarizes what you mean to tell the reader or provides a clear and interesting ending.
  • Be concise. Do not include unimportant or minor details.
  • Avoid making vague or general statements. Try to be specific in your descriptions and ideas.
